Complementary colors are those opposite each other on the color wheel. Orange and blue are examples of complementary colors.

Contrasting colors are only slightly closer together. Red and blue are examples of contrasting colors.

Analogous colors are near each other on the wheel. Blue and light blue are examples of analogous colors.

Complementary and contrasting color schemes tend to be more exciting and aggressive. Analogous color schemes tend to be more harmonious and calm.
